This review first appeared in the April 21, 1995 issue of the North County Blade-Citizen (now North County Times).

"New Orleans Collective" is a showcase for young jazz lions from the Crescent City who have been honing their craft as sidemen, but who had yet to step out front.

It is a solid, swinging set, with memorable tunes by trumpeter Nicholas Payton, saxophonist Wessell Anderson and pianist Peter Martin. The arrangements are spare, giving each player plenty of solo room. The straight-ahead compositions also lend themselves well to the type of improvised soliloquy that marks the best jazz, and marks the soloing here.

Even though none of these give is a household name (yet), all are first-rate players deserving of wider audiences.
