From country to blues

Crossing Borders
Crossing Borders
By Deanna Bogart

Flying Fish Records: 1992

This review first appeared in the September 18, 1992 issue of the North County Blade-Citizen (now North County Times).

While country sensation Lucinda Williams started out with the blues and migrated to country, Deanna Bogart is headed in the opposite direction.

The one-time member of the Cowboy Jazz, Bogart's second solo album is a small gem of R&B, blues and jazz. In fact, she's far closer to the soul sounds of Marcia Ball or Angela Strehli than she is to the Judds.

Country's loss is the blues' gain, though, as the aptly named "Crossing Borders" showcases Bogart's lithe piano and earthy vocals through a strong set of original tunes. The best of the lot might be her "Don't Know a Thing (About Love) which would be a Top 40 hit if radio was worth anything.
