Fever-pitch blues

Live From Chicago - Bayou Lightning Strikes
Live From Chicago – Bayou Lightning Strikes
By Lonnie Brooks

Alligator Records: 1988

This review first appeared in the April 8, 1988 issue of the San Diego Evening Tribune.

Lonnie Brooks has been laying down his electrifying brand of blues for more than three decades, yet shows no signs of slowing down. His latest release, a "live" set from Chicago, is a fast-paced, hard-charging 45 minutes.

Mixing his rough vocals and his fluorescent guitar sound to a fever pitch, Brooks shows himself as a master blues artist. Tunes like "Got Me By the Tail," "One More Shot" and "Born With the Blues" exhibit his tasteful blending of musical excellence with unabashed showmanship.

Whether he's trading fours with rhythm guitarist Osee Anderson, exhorting keyboardist Tom Giblin to greater heights, or getting the audience to participate, Brooks gives his all here.
