Diz has blown better tunes

This review first appeared in the January 22, 1993 issue of the North County Blade-Citizen (now North County Times).
Recorded in studio circa 1965 under the auspices of the Monterey Jazz Festival, this album features the late Dizzy Gillespie in a big band setting backed by some powerful players in their own right – Harry Sweets Edison (trumpet) and Buddy Collette (reeds) being the biggest names.
While a strong album, there is still a sense of the band holding back. Gillespie himself never really cuts loose, and that's what always marked his playing. Part of the reason this album seems flat is that the selection of material isn't that strong, either.
The arrangements are tight, the playing polished, but this isn't one of Gillespie's better outings.
