Good ... but a spark is missing
Long a staple of the San Diego/Southern California jazz scene, Kevyn Lettau's latest release this one on the prestigious JVC label solid though it is, is still somewhat of a disappointment in that it comes nowhere near capturing just how good a singer and artist Lettau is. Whether the producers reined her in is unclear, but the exuberance that has marked her best work is mostly missing here. Missing, too, is longtime collaborator Peter Sprague, whose lively guitar work might have pushed Lettau further. Particularly disappointing is the lack of much Brazilian music or influences, an area in which Lettau not only has a hard-earned expertise but has shown a special knack for. Thus, "Nana Das Aguas" is easily the highlight of this album. |
