A forgotten R&B son
A blues shouter in the mold of Jimmy Rushing or Big Joe Turner, Lewis shared both their slightly hoarse vocal style and Kansas City feel. This "best of" reissue of old Imperial sides from EMI recorded in the mid-'50s, including his biggest hit, the title track (which sounds like a jazzier Fats Domino). Another gem is his reworked version of Turner's "Flip, Flop and Fly," retitled "Bumpity Bump." This is a nice collection of blues, jazz and R&B from one of New Orleans' forgotten sons. |
