Bringing the entire world to his music
Long one of the most cutting-edge practitioners of jazz, McLaughlin's version of fusion brought together more than jazz and rock he brought the whole world, but especially India. This CD reissue of a 1978 release is more accessible than McLaughlin's work with the Mahavishnu Orchestra in the early and mid-'70s, but it's still pretty heavy stuff, with lots of feedback on McLaughlin's electric guitar, dissonance and driving solos. Easy listening background music this isn't. It's good to see this in print again, though, because it reminds us of a time when "fusion" didn't mean smooth jazz and when record companies were willing to take a chance on innovators. |
