Good-time fun
The new "live" album from Moe Bandy and Joe Stampley is surprisingly listenable and entertaining, not always the case with live albums, particularly in country. But Moe and Joe don't pretend to take themselves seriously; their songs don't address heavy social issues. Instead, they offer their audience an escape with good music and humorous lyrics that poke fun at the problems of everyday life. The best song of the album just may be "Tell Ole I Ain't Here, He Better Get On Home." Bandy and Stampley trace the story of a hen-pecked husband trying to escape his domestic hell, with the raucous audience joining in on the chorus. "Where's the Dress" pokes fun at Culture Club's Boy George in typical mid-American humor, with Moe and Joe deciding that if it pays well, being a transvestite can't be all bad. The duo also performs their joint theme songs, "We've Got Our Moe-Joe Working' and "Hey Joe (Hey Moe)," with the audience also singing along on those. The band is adequate, if subdued. But the value of Moe and Joe's performance is in musical virtuosity, but in their on-stage relationship and banter. |
