A fine overview of a band's beginnings
Taken from their first three and now out of print in the United States albums, "The Essential Collection" captures the fiery essence of the music of Southern California's Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers. Featuring the rough-and-ready vocals and harp of Piazza, the slapping upright bass of Bill Stuve and the barrelhouse piano of Miss Honey, the Mighty Flyers' sound is bluesy roadhouse music of the first order. (Too, original guitarist Junior Watson is featured here, giving the band a rawer sound than they now have.) This is a fine book end to the Flyers' new Black Top release, "Alphabet Blues," and makes available for Southern Californians the early music of one of our own. |
