Lovett backup singer makes holiday magic

Here Comes Frani Claus
Here Comes Frani Claus
By Francine Reed

CMO Records: 2000

This review first appeared in the December 15, 2000 edition of the American Reporter.

Francine Reed makes her living as one of Lyle Lovett's regular backup singers, but she's also recorded a series of top-notch R&B records of her own. This year, she's released a four-song EP of holiday music showing off her considerable singing chops.

Her rousing version of "Go Tell It on the Mountain" will play year-round, and if her version of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" is a bit too fast to really work, that gorgeous, smokey voice of hers is still pure pleasure to listen to.

Rounding out the EP is a slow love ballad, "Christmas Day," and the rockin' "Grandma's Cookin' Christmas," which has enough sass and spirit to become a holiday regular.
