A dry beginning
The 1971 debut of Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter's innovative fusion band is, by the standards they set subsequently, pretty boring stuff, as this CD reissue shows. This release shows none of the compositional brilliance that was to follow, none of the balanced blending of Zawinul's electronic keyboards with Shorter's saxophones, none of the intricate arrangements. "Heavy Weather" and "Mr. Gone" have also been reissued in CD format; listeners would be better off with those substantially superior releases, which are far more representative of this band's work. |
